Ghost of Yotei in real Hokkaido: 6 places, which month, and what 188 stays cost

Ghost of Yotei turned one mountain in southwestern Hokkaido into a destination, and the towns around it have started to move. Video Games Chronicle reported on 25 June 2026 that Niseko Town signed an agreement to sell game merchandise, with a town official saying they hoped people would come to know the spring, summer and autumn scenery and then visit for real.
This page is not another list of locations — several of those already exist. What it adds is the two things nobody has answered: which month the ten-year temperature and rainfall numbers favour, and how much the room price changes depending on which zone of the same route you sleep in, measured across 188 stays we listed and priced ourselves on 6 October 2026. What it is not: a game guide, and not a page that sells tours.
What the real places are, and how far apart
Short answer: the official tour route has six real stops, spread over roughly 46 km between Mount Yotei, Lake Toya and Noboribetsu. For the mountain without snow, come July to October; and if you would rather not pay ski prices, base yourself at Noboribetsu — the only one of the three zones where not a single stay doubled on the mid-ski night.
The official PlayStation and Klook tour runs six stops, as reported by LIVE JAPAN on 12 June 2026: Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura, Jigokudani, Lake Toya and its onsen district, Mount Yotei viewpoints including the Silo observation deck, Makkari village and Fukidashi Park. Sony's own page of 15 October 2025 names only Mount Yotei and Ezo, the island's older name — it does not list those six. We keep the two apart on purpose.
Every distance here is a straight line computed from real map coordinates, not a driving distance. From New Chitose Airport it is 77.1 km to Kutchan, 74.1 km to Toyako Onsen and 54.1 km to Jigokudani. These are not neighbours; a one-day loop means a day mostly spent in a vehicle.

Mount Yotei: which side the familiar view comes from
Mount Yotei stands alone on a plain, so it is visible from many directions, but the angle closest to the game's imagery is the north and west — the Niseko and Kutchan side. From the summit it is 9.7 km in a straight line to Hirafu village and 9.7 km to Kutchan station.
The other angle the official tour uses is the Silo observation deck above Lake Toya, 7.1 km from the onsen town. From there Mount Yotei sits about 22.3 km away, so the frame is a wide one with the lake in it rather than the mountain filling the shot.

Niseko and Kutchan: a ski town that wants you outside winter
What lifts this above games news is that the town itself has said so. Video Games Chronicle reported on 25 June 2026 that Niseko Town signed an agreement with an IP collaboration firm to sell game merchandise, and quoted a town official hoping people would come to know the scenery of spring, summer and autumn through the game and then actually visit.
In trip-planning terms: this is a town that already sells winter and is trying to sell the other three seasons. That is exactly what our room-price numbers show, and it is why this page spends more of itself on which month than on a list of place names.

Lake Toya and the Silo deck
Lake Toya is a caldera lake with an onsen town on its shore, and it sits at the midpoint of the route — 38.0 km from Kutchan and 27.6 km from Noboribetsu's Jigokudani.
If you only have one night to spend between the ends of the route, Toya is the choice that saves you from doubling back, and it is the zone where ski-season rates move up moderately rather than violently — see the table below.

Noboribetsu: Jigokudani and the Edo-period village
Jigokudani is the sulphur-steam valley that feeds the whole town's hot springs; Noboribetsu Date Jidaimura is a culture park recreating an Edo-period town, only 3.8 km away in a straight line, so the two work as one half-day.
Date Jidaimura's own site lists summer hours of 9:00 to 17:00 for 25 April to 31 October 2026, checked on 6 October 2026. Winter hours are shorter and show times change by season, so check the official page again before you go.

Fukidashi Park at Kyogoku
Fukidashi Park is 6.3 km in a straight line from the summit of Mount Yotei, where the mountain's water comes up out of the ground all year. It is a short stop and it sits on the north side of the mountain, on the way. Makkari village is on the other side, 9.4 km from the summit.
These two are the reason most people hire a car instead of taking the train: neither has a railway station of its own.

Which month, decided on ten years of numbers
The ERA5 set we hold has exactly one row on this island, Sapporo. There is no row for Niseko, Lake Toya or Noboribetsu, so we use Sapporo carefully as a regional stand-in and never call these figures the weather of those three places.
Read the two tables below. For the mountain without snow, July is the warmest month that is also the lightest on rain among the warm ones: a mean daily max of 25.4°C and 119 mm. August is marginally warmer at 25.7°C but jumps to 190 mm, the wettest month of the year. October cools sharply to 15.4°C but drops to 109 mm, and that is foliage season.
January, meanwhile, has a mean daily maximum still below freezing at -2.4°C and a mean minimum of -9.2°C. That is why room prices on the Niseko side behave unlike any other month of the year.
What a ski night costs against a pre-snow night
We listed the stays first and priced that same list afterwards, rather than searching each night and comparing whatever came back. The universe is 188 stays within 20 km of one of the three hubs — 71 around Mount Yotei, 62 at Lake Toya and 55 at Noboribetsu. Every night compared is a Saturday, two adults in one room, all priced on the same day, 6 October 2026.
The clearest result is not that Hokkaido gets more expensive in winter — it is that only part of it does. Of the 21 stays around Mount Yotei we could pair, every one priced Saturday 16 January 2027 more than 3% above Saturday 14 November 2026, and 18 of them at least doubled. At Noboribetsu, of 35 paired stays, not one doubled and 12 were cheaper.
One more measurable thing: early February is not dearer than mid-January. Saturday 6 February 2027 against Saturday 16 January 2027 paired 104 stays, which clears our 100-pair bar, and the median ratio is 1.00 — the same — with 51 unchanged, 43 higher and 10 lower.
Getting there from New Chitose Airport
New Chitose is the gateway, 41.1 km in a straight line from central Sapporo. From Sapporo it is 52.6 km to Kutchan, 70.6 km to Lake Toya and 65.6 km to Jigokudani.
Two of the six stops — Fukidashi Park and Makkari village — have no railway station, and neither does the Silo deck. Without a car or a transfer you will either drop stops or spend the day changing vehicles. For timetables and passes, use JR Hokkaido's own pages and the airport's transport page linked at the end; we opened both on 6 October 2026.
Five things to settle first
What to decide before you book:
- Pick the zone before the hotel: the Niseko side gives you the mountain full-frame, the Noboribetsu side gives you a price that does not follow the ski season.
- If you are coming for the mountain without snow, avoid August — at 190 mm it is Sapporo's wettest month of the year.
- Check Date Jidaimura's opening hours on its own site before you go; hours and show times change by season.
- Allow travel days. The three hubs sit 27.6 to 46.0 km apart in a straight line, and the road is longer than that.
- If you are planning next summer, do not read empty results as sold out: the feed currently returns a price for 17 July 2027 at only 53 of the 188 stays.
What this page is not
This is not a game guide, and it does not match scenes to places shot for shot. The game's world is a design, not a one-to-one recording of a real location, so we stick to what the official pages themselves say.
It does not sell tickets or tours and recommends no tour seller. We mention that an official tour exists only to explain where the list of six stops comes from. Every outbound link here is the operator's or authority's own page.
And it does not claim summer is always cheaper. What we measured is a mid-ski night against a pre-snow night for the same set of stays. Summer 2027 rates are still too thin in the feed to draw a conclusion.
Where to stay along the route
These are the three real bases on the route, not our three favourite hotels. Each card states the zone's trade-off before it names a stay.

Best for · People here for the mountain itself
The closest base to Mount Yotei and to the views players recognise — and the page's clearest trade-off: of the 21 hotels we could pair, every single one priced the mid-ski Saturday more than 3% higher, and 18 of them at least doubled.

An onsen town 46.0 km from Mount Yotei, which puts it largely outside the ski villages' market. Of the 35 hotels we paired, not one doubled for the ski night and 12 were actually cheaper. The cost is a longer drive on the day you go to photograph the mountain.

This list comes from our own feed on 6 October 2026. The rule is a review score of 8.5 or better from at least 500 reviews, and the stay must still be bookable on the reference night, Saturday 14 November 2026. Ordered by review score, never by commission; nobody paid to be on this list. No prices are shown because room rates change by the hour — open the live price yourself. Every distance is a straight line from real coordinates, not a driving distance.
See live Hokkaido stay pricesA mid-ski Saturday against a pre-snow Saturday — counted hotel by hotel
Every row pairs the SAME hotel across both nights; it is not a median of two different result sets. Both nights were priced on one day, 6 October 2026.
| Zone | Hotels paired | Up by more than 3% | Unchanged | Cheaper | Up 2x or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Around Mount Yotei (Niseko–Kutchan) | 21 | 21 | 0 | 0 | 18 |
| Lake Toya | 37 | 31 | 3 | 3 | 13 |
| Noboribetsu | 35 | 12 | 11 | 12 | 0 |
| Whole route | 93 | 64 | 14 | 15 | 31 |
Our own rule is that a sample must reach 100 pairs before we publish a median. The whole route paired 93 hotels, which is short of it, so this page publishes counts only and no median.
Sapporo monthly rainfall (mm) — 10-year mean
Sapporo is the only point on Hokkaido for which we hold our own ERA5 row. Niseko, Lake Toya and Noboribetsu have no row of their own in this dataset, so we do not lend Sapporo's numbers to them.
| Month | Rainfall (mm) | Days with 1 mm or more |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | 68 | 17 |
| Feb | 69 | 16 |
| Mar | 74 | 13 |
| Apr | 83 | 13 |
| May | 94 | 12 |
| Jun | 121 | 13 |
| Jul | 119 | 12 |
| Aug | 190 | 15 |
| Sep | 128 | 11 |
| Oct | 109 | 14 |
| Nov | 121 | 17 |
| Dec | 83 | 17 |
August is Sapporo's wettest month of the year (190 mm); July is the lightest of the warm months (119 mm). No Sapporo month falls under our calendar's dry threshold of 50 mm.
Sapporo monthly temperature (°C) — 10-year mean
| Month | Mean daily max (°C) | Mean daily min (°C) |
|---|---|---|
| Jan | -2.4 | -9.2 |
| Feb | -1.7 | -8.6 |
| Mar | 3.7 | -4.7 |
| Apr | 11.5 | 1.8 |
| May | 17.2 | 7.7 |
| Jun | 20.7 | 12.4 |
| Jul | 25.4 | 17.6 |
| Aug | 25.7 | 18.7 |
| Sep | 22.1 | 13.9 |
| Oct | 15.4 | 6.8 |
| Nov | 8.1 | 0.5 |
| Dec | 0.2 | -6.5 |
August is the warmest month (25.7 / 18.7°C); in January even the mean daily maximum stays below freezing (-2.4°C). That is why winter sells here — and the same reason the summer never gets hot.

Frequently asked questions
- Where was Ghost of Yotei filmed in Hokkaido?
- A game has no filming locations. Sony's official page of 15 October 2025 says the world is built on Hokkaido under its older name Ezo and names Mount Yotei directly. The list of six stops people travel to comes from the official PlayStation and Klook tour route.
- Which month is best for the trip?
- For the mountain without snow, July strikes the best balance on Sapporo's ten-year numbers: a mean daily max of 25.4°C with 119 mm of rain. August is marginally warmer but brings 190 mm, the wettest month of the year. October cools to 15.4°C with 109 mm and gives you the foliage.
- Which zone avoids ski-season pricing?
- Noboribetsu. Of the 35 stays we could price on both Saturday 16 January 2027 and Saturday 14 November 2026, not one doubled and 12 were cheaper — against the Mount Yotei side, where all 21 paired stays rose by more than 3%.
- Can the six stops be done in one day?
- Yes, but most of that day is spent travelling. The three hubs sit 27.6 to 46.0 km apart in a straight line and the roads are longer. The official tour itself runs 10 hours, as LIVE JAPAN reported on 12 June 2026.
- Can it be done without a car?
- Partly. Fukidashi Park, Makkari village and the Silo observation deck have no railway station of their own, so without a car or a transfer you either drop those stops or spend the day changing vehicles.
Where the numbers come from: Temperature and rainfall here are 2016–2025 monthly means from the ERA5 dataset via the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API at Sapporo's coordinate — the only point on Hokkaido in the set we hold. They are a ten-year statistic, not a forecast for your trip, and ERA5 is a roughly 9 km grid, not a weather station. All room figures come from the feed rooozt itself uses, pulled on 6 October 2026 for two adults in one room for one night, every compared night a Saturday. The method was to list all 188 stays within 20 km of Mount Yotei, Lake Toya or Jigokudani first, then price that same list on each night and count only the stays that returned a price on both. Room prices change constantly; always go by the live price at the moment you book.
Still need a room, a ride or a flight?
Three of the six stops have no railway station of their own, and the three bases sit up to 46.0 km apart.
