Where to Stay in Hong Kong: 7 Neighbourhoods by Travel Style, Airport Fares and the Dry Months

The two sides are linked by the MTR Tsuen Wan line (under the harbour from Tsim Sha Tsui to Admiralty/Central) and the Star Ferry between Tsim Sha Tsui and Central/Wan Chai — picking the "wrong" side is no disaster, it just adds a little time each day.

• Kowloon (Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan, Mong Kok, West Kowloon): rooms usually cost less for the same class, the skyline view is seen from this side, and the night markets and street-price restaurants are here. Trade-off: crowded streets and small rooms as standard.
• Island (Central/Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay): the Peak Tram, SoHo bars and the big malls on foot; the Airport Express Hong Kong Station is on this side. Trade-off: pricier rooms, and an office district by day.

Hong Kong's clearest stretch is November to December: average monthly rainfall drops from 88 mm in November to 19 mm in December, the driest month of the year, with average highs of 24.5°C and 20.6°C respectively — all-day walking weather without the stickiness. January stays dry (38 mm) but cooler (average high 19.1°C, low 13.6°C). October (176 mm) is the transition month: past the peak, not yet dry.

If you can choose, avoid June and August (394 and 411 mm), the two wettest months in our dataset — which matches the Hong Kong Observatory's own note that June and August are usually the wettest months and January and December the driest. From May to September every month averages 269 mm or more, with average lows never below 24°C.

On typhoons: the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) states that tropical cyclones may affect Hong Kong from May to November, most often in July to September. That is HKO's guidance, not our dataset — if you travel in those months, check HKO's warning signals directly before heading out (link at the end).

The Airport Express is the fastest and simplest way in, stopping at Tsing Yi → Kowloon → Hong Kong (terminus). Adult single fares: Hong Kong Station HK$120 with Octopus, contactless card or QR (HK$130 Smart Ticket); Kowloon HK$105 (HK$115); Tsing Yi HK$73 (HK$80). Round trips are HK$215 / HK$195 / HK$130 respectively — all read from MTR's fares page on 31 August 2026; fares change, so check the official page before you travel.

Worth knowing: Airport Express Kowloon Station is not Tsim Sha Tsui — it sits in West Kowloon next to the Elements mall and needs one more hop. If you're staying in Tsim Sha Tsui, Jordan or Mong Kok, the Cityflyer A21 bus runs straight down Nathan Road past these areas; much cheaper than the train but slower — fares are on the Citybus/airport pages (not quoted here, as we did not read them from an official page this round).

An Octopus card works on trains, buses, ferries and convenience stores. The Tourist Octopus (sold) costs HK$39 with no stored value and no deposit; the On-Loan adult card takes a HK$50 deposit with HK$150 initial value (read from the Octopus page on 31 August 2026).

The Immigration Department's (ImmD) visit-visa table lists Thai passport holders as visa-free for 30 days (read from the ImmD page updated August 2026). Conditions change — re-check the official page before booking flights; this article is not a visa reference.

If none of the areas fits — a very late or very early flight, or a trip built around Disneyland and Ngong Ping — consider Tung Chung on Lantau Island, at the end of the Tung Chung line near the airport with an outlet mall. The trade-off is half an hour or more into town.

• Look at the final total, not the first-line nightly rate — service charge and taxes may be added at the end.
• Small rooms are normal; two large suitcases may not open at once — check square metres and bed type.
• Trade-fair weeks and Mainland China holidays push prices up and sell rooms out fast — check the holiday calendar before picking dates.
• If you're crossing to Macao or Shenzhen, stay near the piers (Sheung Wan / Tsim Sha Tsui) or West Kowloon Station.
