Where to stay in Khao Yai: 6 areas across 381 stays in our live feed, and the December night over half sold out

Where to stay in Khao Yai is a harder question than it looks, because “Khao Yai” on booking sites is not just the road up to the national park. It stretches from Pak Chong town through Phaya Yen and Pong Ta Long all the way to Wang Nam Khiao, more than 50 km from the park gate. Pick the wrong area and a two-day trip turns into a driving trip.

This page splits the 381 stays that rooozt's price feed finds under “Khao Yai” into 6 areas by their real coordinates. For each one it gives the distance to the Sala Chao Pho gate, who it suits, and which cool-season nights lose the most rooms, using prices we actually pulled on 1 October 2026. What this page is not: it is not a paid hotel list, and it sells no event tickets.

Where to stay in Khao Yai: the short answer

If you want to be inside the park early, stay on upper Thanarat Road near the Sala Chao Pho gate. The 78 stays in that area sit a median 3.6 km from the gate in a straight line. If you are arriving by train or bus with no car, stay in Pak Chong town, near the station, restaurants and markets, but about 22 km from the gate. If you want the widest choice, the east side around Pong Ta Long and Wang Katha has the most: 82 stays.

Wang Nam Khiao is a different trip. Booking systems count it as “Khao Yai”, but the Wang Nam Khiao district office is 52 km from the Sala Chao Pho gate in a straight line. It suits people visiting Wang Nam Khiao itself, not people driving into the park every day.

What the numbers add: on a Saturday night the same hotel cost about 10% more than on the Wednesday of the same week (median), and the night that lost the most rooms in our set was not New Year's Eve but Saturday 12 December 2026, with 181 of 381 stays still bookable. The detail is in the rooms-by-night section below.

How big “Khao Yai” is in booking systems, and how you get into the park

We searched the names เขาใหญ่ / Khao Yai / ปากช่อง / Pak Chong with several guest combinations, 72 searches in all, and got 381 distinct stays. The system puts every one of them in the same city, “Khao Yai”, but their coordinates run from latitude 14.36 to 14.93 and longitude 101.01 to 101.93 — from the Muak Lek side all the way to Wang Nam Khiao.

On the park side there are two main checkpoints, according to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation: the Sala Chao Pho checkpoint on the Pak Chong side (Thanarat Road, Highway 2090, at km 23, then about 15 km more to the park headquarters — about 200 km from Bangkok in total), and the Noen Hom checkpoint on the Prachinburi side (via Nakhon Nayok and Prachinburi, about 170 km in total).

Almost every stay in the feed is on the Pak Chong side, so this page measures distance from the Sala Chao Pho gate. Every distance is a straight line between coordinates; the real drive on winding roads is longer.

Upper Thanarat Road, near the Sala Chao Pho gate: the easiest early start

This area is every stay within 7 km of the Sala Chao Pho gate: 78 stays, a median 3.6 km from the gate. It suits people who plan to be in the park early for wildlife and waterfalls, because it cuts the most morning driving, and it has 22 stays that clear our bar (review score 8.5+ from at least 200 reviews).

The downside: it is a median 19 km from Pak Chong town, so restaurants and convenience stores mean driving down Thanarat Road, and on peak nights it empties fast. On Saturday 12 December only 31 of its 78 stays were still bookable.

The park department says Khao Yai has roughly 140–200 wild elephants, usually moving in herds, and that deer and barking deer graze the roadside from evening into the night. If you drive up or down at dusk, allow time and go slowly.

Middle and lower Thanarat Road, and Pak Chong town: near the train, far from the gate

Pak Chong town (within 5 km of Pak Chong railway station) has 40 stays, a median 1.5 km from the station but 22 km from the Sala Chao Pho gate. It suits people arriving by train or bus, people who want to walk out for food, and people who are not going into the park every day.

Between town and the gate is middle and lower Thanarat Road: 45 stays, a median 12 km from the gate and 11 km from the station. It works as a halfway point if you have a car and want to stop at roadside cafés, farms and restaurants during the day, but only 6 stays there clear our bar.

Worth knowing: these two areas lost the most rooms on Saturday 12 December. Town was down to 7 of 40 bookable stays, middle and lower Thanarat to 12 of 45. If your trip lands on that weekend, book these first or look at another area.

East side, Pong Ta Long and Wang Katha: the most choice

East of Thanarat Road, around Pong Ta Long and Wang Katha subdistricts, there are 82 stays — the most of any area — and the most that clear our bar, 27.

The downside is how spread out it is: a median 18 km from the Sala Chao Pho gate, some more than 24 km. It suits people who mainly want a resort stay and will go into the park for one day. On Saturday 12 December this area still had 48 of 82 stays bookable, a higher share than the gate area or town.

West side, Phaya Yen: closer to the gate than the east

West of Thanarat Road, around Phaya Yen subdistrict, there are 61 stays, a median 11 km from the Sala Chao Pho gate — about 7 km closer than the east side — but around 20 km from Pak Chong town. 12 of them clear our bar.

It suits drivers who want a hill-country stay without being far from the gate. On Saturday 12 December 26 of 61 were still bookable, and on New Year's Eve 37 of 61.

Wang Nam Khiao: in the “Khao Yai” system, 52 km from the gate

The 34 stays within 25 km of the Wang Nam Khiao district office are counted as “Khao Yai” by booking systems, but the district office is 52 km from the Sala Chao Pho gate in a straight line. If a Khao Yai search shows you a well-priced stay in Wang Nam Khiao, check the map before you book.

The flip side: if Wang Nam Khiao is the point of the trip — Khao Phaeng Ma wildlife sanctuary, for example — this area barely fills. On Saturday 12 December 33 of its 34 stays were still bookable, and on New Year's Eve 25 of 34. Only 4 stays there clear our bar.

How many rooms are left, night by night: over half gone on Saturday 12 December

We priced the same 381 stays one night at a time, 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night, pulled on 1 October 2026. Ordinary Wednesdays had 371–372 bookable. November Saturdays had 298–336. Saturday 5 December (Father's Day, with Monday 7 December as the substitute holiday) had 290. New Year's Eve, 31 December, had 252. Saturday 12 December had 181, the lowest in the set.

Saturday 12 December falls on the weekend the Big Mountain music festival has announced for 12–13 December 2026 at Farm Chokchai 3, Khao Yai (Time Out Bangkok, 18 August 2026). We have not shown that rooms disappeared because of it — only that the dates line up. This page sells no tickets and recommends no ticket seller.

A second check: we searched “เขาใหญ่” and “Khao Yai” the way anyone would and counted only priced stays from the 381-stay set. That gave 201–209 stays on 11 November, 14 November and 5 December, but 153 on 12 December — the same direction. (Those searches return roughly 200 results each, so they cannot confirm New Year's Eve, which still had 252.)

Prices: Saturday about 10% over Wednesday, New Year's Eve about 26%

Comparing the same hotel within the same week, Saturday 14 November against Wednesday 11 November came out at a median 1.10 times, from 330 pairs (193 dearer, 134 unchanged), and Saturday 21 November against Wednesday 18 November was also 1.10, from 302 pairs. The two weeks agree.

New Year's Eve, Thursday 31 December, against Thursday 3 December came out at a median 1.26 times from 242 pairs, and a quarter of hotels were up 1.68 times or more. Saturday 12 December against Saturday 28 November was only 1.06 times from 160 pairs: on that night the problem is rooms disappearing, not the remaining rooms jumping in price.

Ratios use each hotel's lowest room rate on the day we pulled the feed, not the price you will get. We do not split ratios by area, because no area reaches 100 pairs.

Khao Yai weather in the cool season: the hills run about 2–3°C cooler than the foothills

Ten-year averages (2016–2025) from ERA5 at the grid point near the visitor centre (grid elevation 738 m): December averages a high of 24.7°C and a low of 16.7°C, with 10.7 nights below 16°C. The foothill grid point near lower Thanarat Road (389 m) averages 27.7°C and 18.4°C.

Rain eases from November. The hill grid point averages 59 mm in November and 18 mm in December, while October is still wet at 195 mm. The park department itself says December and January run at about 17°C, and that October to February is when it gets the most visitors.

A limit: an ERA5 grid cell is several kilometres wide, so these are area averages, not the temperature at a viewpoint or campsite. Higher ground will be colder than the table.

Staying inside the park: the park department's lodges and campsite

Lodges inside the park are not in our price feed and are not sold through the usual booking sites. The park department runs a number of lodges around the Khao Yai National Park headquarters, booked through the department's own lodge-booking system, with keys collected at the visitor centre, and there is the Lam Takhong campsite.

This suits people who want to wake up in the forest without passing the gate in the morning. The downsides: the park's restaurant keeps set hours (Monday–Friday 07:00–17:00, Saturday–Sunday 07:00–19:00, according to the park department's page) and phone signal is only available at certain spots.

Picking an area quickly

If you are still unsure, ask one question: how many days will you go into the park?

  • Every day, or very early: upper Thanarat Road near the Sala Chao Pho gate, or stay inside the park
  • You have a car, want a hill-country stay, and will go into the park for one day: Phaya Yen on the west side, or Pong Ta Long–Wang Katha on the east
  • Arriving by train or bus with no car: Pak Chong town, then arrange a ride into the park
  • Wang Nam Khiao is the point of the trip: stay in Wang Nam Khiao — just don't stay there to drive into the park every day
  • Your trip is Saturday 12 December or New Year's Eve: book early; the gate area and town lose rooms fastest

Frequently asked questions

Which area of Khao Yai is best if you are going into the national park?
Upper Thanarat Road near the Sala Chao Pho gate. The 78 stays within 7 km of the gate sit a median 3.6 km from it in a straight line, the closest of any area. To wake up in the forest itself, the park department's lodges inside the park are booked through the department's own system.
Is Pak Chong town a good base for Khao Yai?
Yes, if you are arriving by train or bus with no car. The 40 stays within 5 km of Pak Chong station are a median 1.5 km from it, but about 22 km from the Sala Chao Pho gate, so you need a ride into the park.
Is Wang Nam Khiao close to Khao Yai National Park?
No. Booking systems count Wang Nam Khiao as part of “Khao Yai”, but the Wang Nam Khiao district office is 52 km from the Sala Chao Pho gate in a straight line. It suits people visiting Wang Nam Khiao itself.
How much more do Khao Yai stays cost on a Saturday?
In our feed the same hotel cost a median 1.10 times more on Saturday than on the Wednesday of the same week, in both 11–14 November (330 pairs) and 18–21 November 2026 (302 pairs). Pulled 1 October 2026, 2 adults, 1 room.
Is Khao Yai already full for New Year?
Not yet. As of 1 October 2026, 252 of 381 stays were still bookable for 31 December, but the same hotel cost a median 1.26 times what it did on Thursday 3 December. The night with the fewest rooms left in our set was Saturday 12 December, with 181.

Where the numbers come from: Room counts and price ratios come from rooozt's price feed, pulled on 1 October 2026. We first built the full list of stays (searches for เขาใหญ่ / Khao Yai / ปากช่อง / Pak Chong × 6 guest combinations × 3 nights, 72 searches, 381 stays), then priced that same set every night: 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night, lowest room rate only. Areas are drawn from the feed's coordinates; reference points come from Google Maps (Sala Chao Pho gate, Pak Chong railway station, Wang Nam Khiao district office). Checkpoint, route, lodge and stated-climate details were read from the Khao Yai National Park page of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation on 1 October 2026. The 7 December 2026 substitute holiday is from ttb bank's 2026 holiday notice. Big Mountain dates are from Time Out Bangkok (18 August 2026). Temperature and rain are 2016–2025 monthly means from ERA5 (via Open-Meteo) at the grid points near the visitor centre and near lower Thanarat Road — historical statistics, not a forecast. All distances are straight lines between coordinates, not driving distance.

Still need a room, a ride or a flight?

Khao Yai has no airport. If you are flying into Bangkok and not driving, line up the room and the ride from the airport together.
