Tokyo 5 Day Trip Cost: The Budget Category by Category, With Room Rates Measured Across 233 Stays
.jpeg?width=1200)
Short answer first: the block that makes two identical five-day Tokyo trips cost different amounts is the room, not the food and not the attractions. And the room rate moves on three things — the area you pick, the day of the week, and the month. We measured the same 233 stays within 8 km of the Ginza / Tokyo Station circle across 10 nights on 9 October 2026, and found that the same hotels cost 2.23 times more on Saturday 14 November 2026 than on Tuesday 12 January 2027.
This page does not hand you one total, because one total fits nobody's trip. Instead it splits the budget into blocks and says plainly which block comes from statistics the Japanese government collects itself, which comes from the price feed we measure, which is a published fare on an operator's own page, and which we have no data for at all and therefore leave blank.
Which block of a Tokyo budget is actually the big one
The Japan Tourism Agency surveys what inbound visitors spend every quarter. Its April–June 2026 first preliminary release, published on 15 July 2026, puts spending by Thai visitors at an average of 230,703 yen per person per trip over an average stay of 7.7 nights: 83,902 yen on accommodation, 53,004 yen on food and drink, 21,362 yen on transport inside Japan, 6,348 yen on entertainment and services, and 65,958 yen on shopping.
Two things that figure does not include, and you need both before using it. One, international airfare — the survey counts only money spent inside Japan. Two, it is an average across every city in Japan, not Tokyo alone. Divided by the 7.7-night average stay it comes to roughly 10,896 yen a night on accommodation, 6,884 yen on food, 2,774 yen on transport, 824 yen on entertainment and 8,566 yen on shopping.
That division has a limit worth stating out loud. A four-night trip does not cost four sevenths of the average trip, because shopping and the airport run barely scale with the number of nights while rooms and meals scale directly. The survey is good for answering what share of your money goes where. It is not good enough to answer how much to bring. That answer lives in the biggest block — the room — and that one we can measure ourselves.

Which month is cheapest for a Tokyo hotel, measured across the same 233 stays
The method is to build the full list of stays first and only then ask for prices — not to search each night separately and compare the results, because two searches return two different sets of hotels and their medians are not comparable. We searched the city name in Thai and in English across one to four adults and one to two rooms, found 336 stays, kept the 233 whose coordinates fall within 8 km of the centre of the Ginza / Tokyo Station circle in our own neighbourhood registry, and then asked for prices on that same set on all 10 nights, with two adults in one room every time.
Measured against Tuesday 12 January 2027, the cheapest night in the set: Tuesday 9 February 2027 is level at 1.01x, Tuesday 8 December 2026 is 1.09x, Tuesday 9 March 2027 is 1.12x, Tuesday 10 November 2026 is 1.29x, Tuesday 6 April 2027 in cherry blossom season is 1.55x, and Tuesday 29 December 2026 in the New Year week is 1.84x. Every figure is the median of per-hotel ratios across stays that returned a price on both nights, and every pair count is above 100.
What makes this set more useful than it first looks is what happens when you put it beside our own rainfall data. January, the cheapest month in the set, is also Tokyo's driest: the 2016–2025 monthly mean is 51 mm with just 5 days at or above 1 mm, the fewest of any month. April, which costs half as much again, carries 135 mm and 12 rain days. January's trade-off is the cold — a mean daily low of 0°C and a mean daily high of 9.2°C.

How much more does a Saturday cost than a Tuesday? We measured three months separately
In November 2026 the same hotels cost a median of 1.54 times more on Saturday the 14th than on Tuesday the 10th, across the 122 stays that returned a price on both nights: 100 went up, 11 stayed level, 11 went down, and 35 of them at least doubled.
We repeated the measurement in two other months to see whether November was a fluke. In January 2027, Saturday the 16th against Tuesday the 12th came out at 1.33x across 158 pairs, with 136 up, 19 level and only 3 down. In April 2027, Saturday the 10th against Tuesday the 6th came out at 1.12x across 105 pairs. The direction holds in all three months; only the size changes. In a month where the ordinary weeknight is already expensive, the Saturday gap narrows.
The number a budget actually turns on is what happens when you combine the two. Saturday 14 November 2026 costs a median of 2.23 times a Tuesday 12 January 2027 night, across the 117 stays priced on both, with 71 of them at least doubling. Saturday 10 April 2027 against the same baseline is 2.08x across 112 pairs. Shifting the day and the month alone, without changing a single hotel, can more than double the room line of a four-night trip.

New Year week is the single most expensive night in the set
Tuesday 29 December 2026 sits in the middle of the New Year week and is the most expensive ordinary weeknight we measured: a median of 1.84 times a Tuesday 12 January 2027 night, across 142 stays priced on both. Of those, 131 went up, 6 stayed level and 5 went down, and 58 at least doubled — the highest share of doublers of any night in the set.
The figure to read next to it is Tuesday 8 December 2026, which sits at just 1.09x. Within the same month the gap between the two is close to double. December is not expensive as a month; it is expensive in its final week. If your dates can move by a week, stepping back to the start of December does more for the budget than hunting for a cheap room on New Year's.

The area you choose moves the room line more than the month and the weekday combined
On one night — Tuesday 10 November 2026 — the median room rate for stays inside the Asakusa circle was 3,294 baht across the 27 that returned a price, while the Shibuya circle sat at 7,732 baht across 13 and the Ginza / Tokyo Station circle at 19,748 baht across 13. Shinjuku, the circle with the most choice, came in lowest at 2,843 baht across 20. The full table of all seven circles is below.
This set needs reading more carefully than the ratio table. These are medians of the stays our feed returned inside each circle, not of every hotel that exists in that area. The Ginza and Shibuya circles in our set are mostly four- and five-star properties, so the median describes the set, not a claim that the area has no affordable rooms. The Ikebukuro and Shinagawa circles hold only 7 and 5 priced stays, too few to represent an area at all.
Even with those caveats, the gap between the cheapest and the dearest circle on one single night is wider than anything else on this page — wider than the gap between months, and wider than the gap between weekdays. For a first trip that is not already tied to one part of the city, the area is the biggest budget decision you will make.
What to budget for getting around Tokyo
Two published fares cover most visitors. Checked on the operators' own pages on 9 October 2026: the Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket costs 700 yen for an adult and 350 yen for a child, and covers all nine Tokyo Metro lines only. The Tokyo Subway Ticket covers both Tokyo Metro and the Toei subway and costs 1,000 yen for 24 hours, 1,500 yen for 48 hours and 2,000 yen for 72 hours for an adult, with children at half price.
The 72-hour pass works out at roughly 667 yen a day. Set against the official statistic of 2,774 yen a night on transport inside Japan for Thai visitors, it is clear that in-city subway rides are only a small part of that block; the rest is intercity rail and the airport runs, which are one-off trip costs rather than daily ones. We do not publish a verdict on whether a pass beats paying per ride, because the answer depends on how many rides you take and on whose lines — and we did not measure that.
The ride in from the airport is the block people most often leave out of a budget altogether. We keep that as its own article comparing the routes from Narita, Haneda and Kansai with their published fares; it is in the further reading at the foot of this page.

Food and attractions: which numbers are ours and which are not
We hold no dataset of food prices, so we print no per-meal figure. The only food number we can stand behind is the official survey's: 53,004 yen per person per trip, which over 7.7 nights works out at roughly 6,884 yen a night. It covers everything from convenience stores to a full sit-down meal and it is a nationwide average. If you eat mostly at street counters and convenience stores your real figure will be clearly lower; if you book famous restaurants every night it will be higher.
Attractions are the smallest block in the survey, at 6,348 yen per person per trip for entertainment and services combined. For a real published rate, Tokyo Skytree's Tembo Deck on a weekday for an adult starts at 2,100 yen booked in advance and 2,400 yen bought on the day; adding the Tembo Galleria starts at 3,100 yen in advance and 3,500 yen on the day, checked on 9 October 2026. Those are starting prices on the operator's own page and they move, so check the page again for your own date.
One observation that is general trip-planning knowledge rather than a figure from our dataset: most shrines, temples and public parks in Tokyo charge no admission at all. What does charge tends to be observation decks, museums and theme parks. If your trip leans towards walking neighbourhoods and eating rather than collecting viewpoints, this block will land well under the average.

What this page is not
This is not a forecast of what your trip will cost. Every ratio is what our feed returned on 9 October 2026 for the nights named. Hotels change prices hourly, and by the time you search, the set of rooms still available will not be the set we measured. What the ratios can tell you is the pattern, not the price.
The 233-stay universe is what the feed returned when we searched two spellings of the city name across eight occupancy combinations. It is not every hotel in Tokyo, and a hotel the feed did not return appears in none of these numbers. The per-night median rates also come from different subsets of that universe, because a different number of stays opens prices on each night — so do not compare the per-night medians directly. Use the ratio column, which is calculated from the same hotel on both nights.
Both April 2027 nights had prices from only 114 of the 233 stays, which means the feed has not fully opened rates that far out — not that the city is full. We therefore draw no conclusion about April availability and use only the price ratios of the 103 to 113 stays we could pair. International airfare we have no data on at all, and we print no figure for it.
Five days and four nights from one base, no hotel change
This plan is built around the subway and never moves hotel, because a mid-trip move in a four-night stay eats half a day and shows you nothing new. The days are interchangeable; they are ordered so the heaviest walking day falls in the middle, when you are neither freshly arrived nor packing.
Day 1 — arrive, check in, and spend the evening in your own area
- Which airport route to take depends on where you land and where you are staying; the routes and their published fares are in our Japan airports article.
- Buy a stored-value card or a subway pass at the station on arrival, then keep day one to the streets around your hotel. Do not put a far-flung sight on the day you are dragging a suitcase.
Day 2 — the east side: Asakusa and the Sumida riverfront
- Walk Senso-ji and the Nakamise shopping street early, before the crowd thickens, then follow the Sumida riverside.
- In the afternoon drop down to Ueno, under two kilometres away in a straight line, where the park and the museums sit together in one place.
Day 3 — the west side: Shibuya and Shinjuku
- This is the heaviest walking day. Start on the Shibuya side late morning and work north to Shinjuku through the late afternoon.
- If you want one observation deck, book it ahead — several of them price the advance ticket below the walk-up one.
Day 4 — the flexible day: pick one
- Option one is to stay in the city and pick up what you missed, for instance the streets around Tokyo Station and the Imperial Palace gardens.
- Option two is a day trip out of the city, which adds intercity rail to the budget. Check the operator's own page for the current fare before you commit.
Day 5 — an easy morning, then out to the airport
- Pack before you leave the room and use station luggage storage if your flight is in the evening.
- Allow more time outbound than inbound: the trip out has check-in and immigration tacked onto the end of it.
Where to stay for four nights: three areas at three budget levels
These three come out of the median-by-area table above: the circles that hold at least three stays passing our filter and still priced on both 10 November 2026 and 12 January 2027. The other four circles are in the table, and our Tokyo where-to-stay article covers all seven in full.
Asakusa
Best for · Tight budget, most choice of the three
Inside the 1.5 km Asakusa circle, 27 stays in our set returned a price for 10 November 2026 at a median of 3,294 baht a night, falling to 2,703 baht for 12 January 2027. It also holds the most stays passing our 8.5-from-500-reviews filter, at 10. The downside is the position: it sits on the east side, and reaching Shibuya or Shinjuku means crossing the city and usually one line change.

Ikebukuro
Best for · West side without a Shibuya price
The 1.7 km Ikebukuro circle holds only 7 stays in our set that returned a price for 10 November 2026, at a median of 3,674 baht, and 2,495 baht for 12 January 2027. It is a major station on the Yamanote loop, like Shibuya and Shinjuku. The caveat matters here: 7 stays is too small a sample to represent an area, so the median describes this set and nothing wider.

Shibuya
Best for · Paying for a central west-side base
The 1.8 km Shibuya circle holds 13 stays in our set priced for 10 November 2026, at a median of 7,732 baht a night — 2.3 times the Asakusa figure for the same night — and still 5,581 baht on 12 January 2027, the cheapest night in the set. The reason to consider it is position rather than price: it sits on the Yamanote loop and is the start of several lines running west.

Every stay on these cards comes from the live price feed rooozt itself runs, pulled on 9 October 2026. The filter is a review score of 8.5 or better from at least 500 reviews, coordinates inside that area's circle in our neighbourhood registry, and a price returned by the feed on both 10 November 2026 and 12 January 2027. They are then ordered by score and the three picked to span as many star levels as the circle allows. Nobody paid to be on this list, and we show no per-hotel price because prices change hourly — open a card for the live rate on your own dates. Up means more than 3 percent above the baseline night, down more than 3 percent below, and the rest count as level. We publish no median where fewer than 100 pairs matched. The last column is comparable across nights because the 233-stay list was built from the night of 17 November 2026, which is none of the nights in this table.

Stays priced on 12 January 2027: Shinjuku 18, Shinagawa 5, Asakusa 25, Ueno 17, Ikebukuro 7, Shibuya 12, Ginza 12. The Shinagawa and Ikebukuro circles hold too few stays in our set to represent an area. The Shibuya and Ginza circles in this set are mostly four- and five-star properties, so the median describes the set rather than meaning the area has no affordable rooms. The Asakusa and Ueno circles overlap in part, and a stay inside both is counted in both rows.

This table gives no single total, because the biggest line — the room — can more than double on the dates you pick. Every cell says where its number comes from. Lines marked as official statistics come from the Japan Tourism Agency's inbound consumption survey for April to June 2026, published 15 July 2026, Thai-national row only, per person per trip over an average 7.7 nights. Frequently asked questions
- How much should I budget for five days in Tokyo?
- We give no single total, because the biggest block — the room — moves up to 2.23x on the dates you choose. The Japan Tourism Agency's April to June 2026 survey puts Thai visitors at an average of 230,703 yen per person per trip across 7.7 nights inside Japan, excluding international airfare. Use that for the shape of the spending, then fill in a real room rate for your own dates.
- Which month has the cheapest hotels in Tokyo?
- Across the same 233 stays measured on 9 October 2026, a Tuesday in mid-January 2027 was cheapest. February matched it at 1.01x, early December was 1.09x, March 1.12x, November 1.29x, April in blossom season 1.55x and the New Year week 1.84x. January is also Tokyo's driest month at 51 mm and 5 rain days, with a mean daily low of 0°C as the trade-off.
- Are Saturdays really more expensive in Tokyo?
- Yes, and we measured three months separately to confirm it. In November 2026 the Saturday cost 1.54 times the Tuesday of the same week across 122 pairs; in January 2027 it was 1.33x across 158 pairs; in April 2027 it was 1.12x across 105 pairs. The direction holds in all three. The gap narrows in months where the ordinary weeknight is already expensive.
- Which Tokyo area is cheapest to stay in?
- On Tuesday 10 November 2026 the Shinjuku circle had the lowest median at 2,843 baht across 20 stays in our set, followed by Asakusa and Ueno at 3,294 baht. The Shibuya circle sat at 7,732 baht and the Ginza circle at 19,748 baht. These are medians of the stays our feed returned inside each circle, not of every hotel that exists in those areas.
- Is a Tokyo subway pass worth it?
- We will not answer that for you, because it depends on how many rides you take and whose lines you ride, and we did not measure that. The published fares on 9 October 2026 are: Tokyo Subway Ticket adult 1,000 yen for 24 hours, 1,500 for 48 and 2,000 for 72, covering Tokyo Metro and Toei; the Tokyo Metro 24-hour Ticket is 700 yen and covers Tokyo Metro lines only. The 72-hour pass averages about 667 yen a day.
Where the numbers come from: Every room figure on this page comes from the live price feed rooozt itself runs, pulled on 9 October 2026 for two adults in one room, one night, priced in Thai baht. The method was to build the stay list first: 16 searches on the city name in Thai and English across one to four adults and one to two rooms, all on the night of 17 November 2026 — which is none of the nights compared here — returning 336 stays, of which the 233 within 8 km in a straight line of the centre of the Ginza / Tokyo Station circle in rooozt's own neighbourhood registry were kept. We then priced that same set on all 10 nights, 60 calls in total, and counted only hotels with a price on both nights when computing a ratio. We publish no median below 100 matched pairs. Rainfall and temperature are 2016–2025 monthly means from the ERA5 dataset via the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API at Tokyo's coordinate — historical statistics, not a forecast, and ERA5 is a roughly 9 km reanalysis grid rather than a weather-station reading. The spending figures come from the Japan Tourism Agency's inbound consumption trend survey, April to June 2026, first preliminary release published 15 July 2026, Thai-national row. Fares and admission prices were read from the official Tokyo Metro and Tokyo Skytree pages on 9 October 2026 and can change at any time. All distances are straight-line from coordinates, not walking distance.
