European Christmas markets 2026: official dates in 6 cities, 10 years of December weather, and the Saturdays when hotels cost twice as much

Europe's Christmas markets do not open together in 2026. Vienna and Budapest start on 13 November, Prague not until 28 November, and while some cities close on Christmas Eve, others run past New Year. Plan from photos alone and you can land before your market opens or after it has packed up.

This page puts three things side by side for six cities: opening and closing dates from official pages checked on 7 Oct 2026, ten years of December weather, and same-hotel prices on market Saturdays against Saturdays outside the season, from rooozt's own price feed. What this page is not: a ranking of the prettiest market, or a list of hotels that paid to appear.

European Christmas markets 2026: the short answer

All six main markets on this page are open at the same time from Saturday 28 Nov 2026. December highs average 4.8–6.5°C with lows of −1.1 to 1.3°C, and rooms near the markets go fast on market Saturdays: on Saturday 5 Dec the same hotels cost a median 2.05 times their price on Saturday 7 Nov (all six cities, 394 pairs).

If you can choose, Saturday 19 Dec rises less — 1.66 times the 7 Nov price (572 pairs) — and every city has more stays still bookable than on 5 Dec. To skip the pre-Christmas rush entirely, Prague runs until 6 Jan 2027 and Budapest until 1 Jan 2027.

Every distance on this page is a straight line between coordinates, not a walking or travel distance.

When do the Christmas markets in Europe open and close?

In order of opening: Vienna, Rathausplatz, 13 Nov–26 Dec · Budapest, St Stephen's Basilica, 13 Nov 2026–1 Jan 2027 · Munich, Marienplatz, 20 Nov–24 Dec · Nuremberg, 27 Nov–24 Dec · Strasbourg opens Friday 27 Nov, closing date not yet announced (checked 7 Oct 2026) · Prague, Old Town Square, 28 Nov 2026–6 Jan 2027. The table at the end of the article adds weekdays and published hours.

The date to watch is 24 December. Munich and Nuremberg close that day, Nuremberg at 14:00, and Vienna at 18:30. If your trip starts after Christmas, the only main markets still open are Vienna (to 26 Dec), Budapest and Prague.

How cold is Europe in December, and how often does it rain?

On the 2016–2025 average from Open-Meteo's ERA5 data, five of the six cities have almost the same December high, 4.8–5.1°C, with Strasbourg a little milder at 6.5°C. Mean lows run from −1.1°C in Munich to 1.3°C in Strasbourg. Against November, when days still reach 8–9.5°C, December is 2.9–4.6 degrees colder.

Rain separates them more clearly. Strasbourg is the wettest at 90 mm over 14 days, then Nuremberg at 76 mm over 14 days and Munich at 71 mm over 13. Prague and Vienna are the driest at 45–47 mm over 10–11 days. Every market here is an open-air square, so wet days shape the trip more than temperature does.

These are historical statistics, not a forecast for your trip, and any single year can differ widely from the average. Check the national forecast again before you leave.

How much more do hotels cost during the Christmas markets?

We priced every stay within 2 km of the middle of each market square on four Saturdays, with one set of conditions — 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night: 7 Nov, before the main markets open · 5 Dec and 19 Dec, during the markets · 16 Jan, after all of them close. We then compared only the same hotel on both nights, so cheaper hotels selling out first cannot bend the result.

Across all six cities, 5 Dec cost a median 2.05 times 7 Nov and 2.40 times 16 Jan. Among the cities with at least 100 pairs, Prague rose the most — 2.41 times its 7 Nov price and 3.69 times its 16 Jan price — and Budapest the least, at 1.67 and 1.78.

What is left matters more than the price. On 5 Dec the share of stays within 2 km still showing a bookable price was 11% in Strasbourg (14 of 127), 26% in Vienna, 32% in Nuremberg, 40% in Prague, 46% in Budapest and 50% in Munich, against 69–91% in every city on 7 Nov. A second check by city-name search, without pairing, pointed the same way in every city: fewer results and a higher middle price on 5 Dec than on 7 Nov.

Which Saturday is better for the markets: early December or close to Christmas?

On the prices we pulled, Saturday 19 Dec rose less than Saturday 5 Dec: 1.66 against 2.05 times the 7 Nov price across all six cities, and the two cities with at least 100 pairs on both nights point the same way — Budapest 1.46 against 1.67, Prague 1.68 against 2.41. Every city also had more stays still bookable on 19 Dec than on 5 Dec; Prague, for example, 184 against 117.

Our data cannot say why 5 Dec costs more. It is the first weekend every market is open, and Austria has a public holiday on Tuesday 8 Dec, but we can only report how far prices differ, not the cause.

The third option is after Christmas. On 16 Jan stays were cheaper than on 7 Nov in the four cities with at least 100 pairs — Vienna, Budapest, Munich and Prague — at a median 0.74–0.96 times, but by then every main market has closed. If you want a market and thinner crowds, Prague and Budapest are the two cities whose markets stay open after 26 Dec.

Vienna Christmas market: first to open, but rooms near it go fast

The Rathausplatz market in Vienna runs from 13 Nov to 26 Dec 2026, daily 10:00–22:00, according to WienTourismus, and its ice rink stays open until 6 Jan 2027. Vienna has several other markets too, including Schönbrunn Palace, which opens on 6 Nov.

December rain is 47 mm over 10 days, the second driest in the table, but rooms near the market went second fastest: on 5 Dec only 38 of 145 stays still showed a bookable price, and a second pull the same day gave 48. That number moves by the hour.

Budapest Christmas market: open into New Year, with the most rooms left

The Advent Bazilika market on Szent István tér runs from 13 Nov 2026 to 1 Jan 2027, according to the market's official site. Of the six cities, Budapest has the most stays within 2 km, 369, and 170 of them were still bookable on 5 Dec.

The same hotels cost a median 1.67 times their 7 Nov price on 5 Dec, the lowest of the cities with at least 100 pairs. December weather: high 4.9°C, low −0.4°C, 52 mm of rain over 9 days.

Munich Christmas market: half the rooms left, and 151 km from Nuremberg

The city of Munich's market on Marienplatz and Rindermarkt runs from 20 Nov to 24 Dec 2026, according to muenchen.de. Nuremberg's Christkindlesmarkt runs from 27 Nov to 24 Dec, daily 10:00–21:00, with the opening ceremony on 27 Nov at 17:30, according to the market's official site. The two market squares are 151 km apart in a straight line.

Munich still had half its stays within 2 km bookable on 5 Dec (71 of 142), while Nuremberg is a small city with only 81 stays in the circle, 26 of them left that night. December rain in both is heavier than in Vienna or Prague: 71 mm and 76 mm over 13–14 days.

Nuremberg Christmas market: the square in front of the Frauenkirche

The market fills the Hauptmarkt in the old town, in front of the Frauenkirche, which is the point we measured the 2 km circle from. Only 5 stays in that circle clear our bar of 8.5 from at least 500 reviews, and just one of them was still bookable on 5 Dec.

If you want Nuremberg on a market Saturday, plan to stay further out or base yourself in Munich and travel in. Both cities' markets close on the same day, 24 Dec.

Strasbourg Christmas market: the wettest, and the first to run out of rooms

Strasbourg's official page says the 2026 market opens on Friday 27 Nov but does not yet give a closing date (checked 7 Oct 2026). It is the only city in the table in France and the mildest, with a mean December high of 6.5°C, but also the wettest, at 90 mm over 14 days.

The number to know before booking: on Saturday 5 Dec only 14 of the 127 stays within 2 km still showed a bookable price, or 11%, and 22 on 19 Dec. A second pull the same day gave the same 14. If Strasbourg is in your plan, it is the city to book first.

Prague Christmas market: open until 6 January, but market Saturdays rise the most

Prague City Tourism lists the Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square markets from 28 Nov 2026 to 6 Jan 2027, with Wenceslas Square open 10:00–22:00. Prague has the lowest December rain in the table, 45 mm, and the most stays clearing our review bar, 36.

It is also where market-Saturday prices rose the most among cities with at least 100 pairs: on 5 Dec the same hotels cost a median 3.69 times their 16 Jan price, falling to 2.40 times on 19 Dec. If you need Prague during the markets, 19 Dec is the night with the better numbers.

Can you do several Christmas markets in one trip, and how far apart are they?

Straight-line distances between the market squares: Munich–Nuremberg 151 km · Vienna–Budapest 216 km · Nuremberg–Prague 250 km · Vienna–Prague 252 km · Strasbourg–Munich 287 km. Real rail or road distances are longer, and we have left out journey times because they depend on each country's timetable.

All six cities are in the Schengen area, so one Schengen entry covers travel between them. Whether you need a visa depends on your passport; check with the embassy of the country where you will spend the most time.

Getting ready for Europe's Christmas markets

Five points that come out of the numbers on this page:

  • Pick cities by their dates first — after 26 Dec only Budapest and Prague are left.
  • If Strasbourg, Vienna or Nuremberg is on a market Saturday, book there before anywhere else: they had the fewest rooms left within 2 km.
  • If you can choose, Saturday 19 Dec rose less than 5 Dec and had more rooms left in every city.
  • Expect days around 5°C, nights around 0°C, and rain or snow on 9–14 days in December.
  • Check Strasbourg's closing date again before you book — it had not been announced as of 7 Oct 2026.

What this page is not, and where the data comes from

This page does not rank which market is prettiest or best, and it does not cover every market in each city. We took one main market per city to measure from. Cities whose 2026 dates we could not confirm on an official page, such as Cologne and Zurich, were left out.

Dates come from each city's or market's official page, checked on 7 Oct 2026 · weather from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API, 2016–2025 mean · prices and rooms left from rooozt's live price feed, pulled on 7 Oct 2026 for 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night · rooozt compares prices across several providers, and no stay paid to be mentioned on this page.

Frequently asked questions

When do the European Christmas markets start in 2026?
The main markets open on different days. Vienna and Budapest start first, on Friday 13 Nov 2026, then Munich on 20 Nov, Nuremberg and Strasbourg on 27 Nov, and Prague on 28 Nov — the first day all six main markets on this page are open. All dates were checked on official pages on 7 Oct 2026.
Which Christmas markets are still open after Christmas Day?
Of these six cities, three main markets stay open after Christmas Day: Vienna until Saturday 26 Dec, Budapest until 1 Jan 2027 and Prague until 6 Jan 2027. Munich and Nuremberg close on 24 Dec, and Strasbourg had not announced its closing date as of 7 Oct 2026.
Which night is cheaper for a Christmas market hotel?
On prices pulled on 7 Oct 2026, Saturday 19 Dec rose less than Saturday 5 Dec: the same hotels across six cities cost 1.66 times their 7 Nov price against 2.05 times, and every city had more stays left to book. These are ratios, not the price you will get.
How cold is Europe in December?
On the ten-year average for these six cities, December highs are 4.8–6.5°C, lows about −1.1 to 1.3°C, with rain or snow on 9–14 days. These are historical statistics from Open-Meteo, not a forecast — any single year can be much colder or milder.
Which Christmas market city gets the most rain?
Strasbourg is the wettest of the six, averaging 90 mm over 14 days in December, followed by Nuremberg at 76 mm and Munich at 71 mm. Prague and Vienna are the driest, at 45 and 47 mm. These are 2016–2025 averages from Open-Meteo.

Where the numbers come from: Market dates come from each city's or market's official page, checked on 7 October 2026, and can change — check the official page again before booking · temperature and rain are monthly means for 2016–2025 from the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API (ERA5 family); Vienna, Budapest, Munich and Prague use the same city coordinates as rooozt's weather calendar, while Nuremberg and Strasbourg were pulled at the market square; these are historical statistics, not a forecast · prices and the number of stays still bookable come from rooozt's live price feed, pulled on 7 October 2026: every stay the feed lists with a review score of 6+ from at least 20 reviews, within 2 km in a straight line of the middle of the market square, 2 adults, 1 room, 1 night, on Saturdays 7 Nov, 5 Dec and 19 Dec 2026 and 16 Jan 2027. A ratio is the median of the same hotel's lowest room rate on two nights, and we publish no median from fewer than 100 pairs. Rooms left change by the hour.
