New Year's Eve 2027 in 12 cities: who counts down first, and which ones are actually clear

New Year fireworks around Taipei 101 at night

New Year's Eve is the one festival the whole world holds at the same time and never actually celebrates at the same moment: midnight takes just over 26 hours to travel around the planet. If you are choosing where to spend 31 December 2026, two things decide the trip more than any photo does — what local time midnight lands at relative to home, and what the weather at that city is actually like that night, statistically rather than promotionally.

This page answers both for 12 cities. The countdown times are computed from the IANA time-zone database for that exact night, so southern-hemisphere and European daylight saving is already applied. The rain and temperature figures are 10-year December and January monthly means from the ERA5 dataset, the same one the weather calendar in our search bar uses. What this page is not: it is not an event listing and it does not sell tickets — most cities had not published their 31 December 2026 programme when this was written.

The short answer: when each city's midnight lands, in Bangkok time

In the order it actually happens. Watching from Thailand on 31 December 2026, you get to see seven countdowns before your own.

  • 18:00 (31 Dec) — Auckland, New Zealand · UTC+13:00
  • 20:00 (31 Dec) — Sydney, Australia · UTC+11:00
  • 22:00 (31 Dec) — Tokyo and Seoul · UTC+09:00
  • 23:00 (31 Dec) — Taipei, Hong Kong and Singapore · UTC+08:00
  • 00:00 (1 Jan) — Bangkok · UTC+07:00
  • 03:00 (1 Jan) — Dubai · UTC+04:00
  • 06:00 (1 Jan) — Paris · UTC+01:00
  • 07:00 (1 Jan) — London · UTC+00:00
  • 12:00 (1 Jan) — New York · UTC−05:00

The southern hemisphere counts down while Asia is still at dinner

Auckland sits at UTC+13:00 that night because New Zealand is on summer time, so its midnight falls at 18:00 on 31 December Bangkok time. Sydney (UTC+11:00) follows two hours later at 20:00. The official Sydney event site states two firework displays — 9pm and midnight local time — which is 18:00 and 20:00 in Bangkok.

Their real advantage is not the clock but the season: both count down in midsummer. Sydney's mean December daily maximum is 25.9°C and Auckland's is 21.4°C, the only two cities here where you can stand outside for fireworks without a winter coat. The trade-off is rain: Auckland averages 95 mm in December across 14 rain days out of 31, Sydney 65 mm across 10.

22:00–23:00 Bangkok time: four East Asian cities inside one hour

Tokyo and Seoul share UTC+09:00, so they count down together at 22:00 Bangkok time; Taipei and Hong Kong (UTC+08:00) follow an hour later at 23:00. If you are choosing between them, what you have to prepare for is the temperature, not the clock.

Seoul is the coldest city on the whole list: a mean December daily minimum of −5.3°C and a mean daily maximum of only 3.0°C. Tokyo is clearly milder at 11.4°C / 2.4°C. A little further south it becomes another world — Taipei at 20.1°C / 15.2°C and Hong Kong at 20.6°C / 14.3°C, light-jacket weather all night.

On clear skies, Hong Kong has the best numbers of any Asian city here: 19 mm of December rain on average, spread over just 3 days of 1 mm or more in the whole month. Taipei is the opposite — 73 mm across 14 rain days, the most rain days of any East Asian city on this list.

Singapore: the same countdown hour as Hong Kong, a completely different sky

Singapore is on UTC+08:00 like Hong Kong and Taipei, so it counts down at 23:00 Bangkok time too. The weather numbers are nowhere near each other: Singapore averages 266 mm of rain in December across 27 rain days out of 31 — the only city here above our 150 mm "wet" threshold, and above it by a wide margin.

In planning terms: assume you will meet rain at some point each day rather than assume you will not. Choosing a hotel you can reach from an MRT station without crossing a long open stretch will change the trip more than choosing a viewing spot will. The temperature is the upside — a mean maximum of 29.0°C and minimum of 24.6°C, warm all night.

Midnight in Bangkok, and one of the best sets of numbers on the list

The point usually missed in the argument about where to fly for New Year: on this same dataset, Bangkok is among the clearest cities of all twelve — 19 mm of December rain, the same as Hong Kong, across only 4 rain days in the month. Its mean daily maximum of 31.1°C is the highest here, and nights come down to 22.5°C.

So if the brief is "riverside fireworks, weather you don't have to gamble on, no long flight", the numbers point home — and save the airfare entirely. The trade-off you accept is crowds and traffic around the venues, which is solved by picking the right neighbourhood rather than by leaving earlier.

3am to noon: Dubai, Paris, London, New York

These four count down after Bangkok is already into the new year — Dubai at 03:00, Paris at 06:00, London at 07:00 and New York at 12:00 on 1 January, Bangkok time. Watching the New York ball drop from Thailand means watching it at lunchtime on New Year's Day, not at night.

Dubai is the driest city on the list by a distance: 12 mm in December, with just 1 day of 1 mm or more in the whole month, 26.8°C by day and 16.2°C at night. Europe and North America are a different proposition — London 9.0°C / 4.0°C with 67 mm across 12 days, Paris 8.4°C / 3.5°C with 76 mm across 13 days, and New York coldest of the western group at 6.3°C / −1.0°C with 112 mm of precipitation, the highest figure here apart from Singapore.

London's official listing lives in the Mayor of London events calendar, which already carries "London New Year's Eve 2026" for 31 Dec 2026 – 1 Jan 2027 (checked 25 September 2026). New York's official source is the Times Square Alliance page. Both links are at the end of this article.

What the numbers say about which skies are actually clear

Using the same thresholds as rooozt's weather calendar (under 50 mm a month = dry, over 150 mm = wet), four cities qualify as dry in December: Dubai at 12 mm, Hong Kong at 19 mm, Bangkok at 19 mm and Seoul at 28 mm. Exactly one qualifies as wet — Singapore at 266 mm. The other seven sit in the middle band.

If the goal is to stand outside for fireworks without gambling on either rain or cold, the two datasets together leave a short list: Bangkok (31.1°C, 19 mm), Dubai (26.8°C, 12 mm) and Hong Kong (20.6°C, 19 mm). Seoul is dry too, but −5.3°C at night is a different kind of trip and needs real clothing for it.

The caveat, stated plainly: these are 10-year means, not a forecast for the night of 31 December 2026. Any single year can differ a lot from the mean. Use the table to choose the city, then use an actual forecast near your travel date to decide about umbrellas and coats.

Five things to settle before the countdown night

These apply to every city on the list, in the order worth doing them.

  • Book the room before the flight — 31 December is the night well-located rooms sell out fastest all year in almost every city, and unlike a normal trip you cannot move the date.
  • Choose the neighbourhood for "can I walk back", not "best view" — after the fireworks, public transport fills and taxis vanish city-wide at the same moment. A room you can walk back to in 20–30 minutes beats a room with a view of the show.
  • Check whether the city closes roads or stations — many cities shut the metro station nearest the venue that night. Read it on the city's official page, not in a forwarded post.
  • Read the cancellation terms before you pay — over New Year many properties impose stricter terms than usual (pay in full up front, non-refundable) on rates that are flexible in other months.
  • Compare the same room across several sites before booking — the spread is usually wider on a high-demand night than on an ordinary one.

What this page is not

Stated plainly, so you know what is not guaranteed here.

  • Not a forecast — every figure is a 10-year mean (2016–2025) at each city's coordinate.
  • Not an event listing — almost no city had published its 31 December 2026 programme when this was checked on 25 September 2026. Use the official links at the end.
  • No ticket sales and no ticket resellers recommended — buy from the event's own official page only.
  • Not every city on earth — these twelve were chosen because our system holds ERA5 data for them and they are reachable from Thailand.
  • The times shown are when each city's midnight lands in Thai time, not when an event starts or fireworks are launched.

If you stay in Bangkok — the neighbourhoods you can actually get back to

These three are the areas rooozt already uses to geo-filter Bangkok search results. They are here because the problem on countdown night is getting home, not getting the best view — each card states its trade-off.

Chao Phraya Riverside

Best for · Want to be near the river show

On the same side as the riverside firework barges, so you can walk or take a hotel boat instead of depending on roads that close. The trade-offs: the highest New Year room rates of the three, and if you pick a property without its own pier the walk to a public pier is longer than it looks on a map.

Silom – Sathorn

Best for · Want both BTS and MRT

Both the BTS and the MRT run through this one district, so there is a backup route home if one line is packed or a station closes, and the Sathorn pier puts you on the river. The trade-off is that this is an office district — over a long holiday many places are shut and it is quieter than you would expect.

Sukhumvit – Thonglor

Best for · Want places still open afterwards

The densest late-opening food and bar strip of the three, so you do not have to rush back the moment the fireworks end, and the BTS runs the length of it. The trade-off is that it is the furthest from the river — if the plan is riverside fireworks, budget more time for the journey back than in the other two.

All nine come from rooozt's own search feed, pulled on 25 September 2026 for the night of 31 December 2026 – 1 January 2027, two adults in one room. Selection rule: review score of 8.5 or higher from at least 500 reviews, then sorted into the area circles by their real coordinates, three per area across different classes (5-star / 4-star / 3-star). Every distance is a straight line from the hotel's coordinate to the centre of that area in our neighbourhood registry — not a walking distance. Nobody paid to be on this list and the order is not by commission. No prices are shown because New Year room rates move hourly and any figure printed here would be wrong the next day — use the price button for live rates on your dates.

Offsets are taken at the instant each city enters the new year, so southern-hemisphere summer time is included (Auckland and Sydney). Note: the first inhabited place into the new year is actually Kiribati's Line Islands at UTC+14:00, which is 17:00 on 31 December Bangkok time — not on this list because we hold no climate data for it and it is hard to reach.

Frequently asked questions

Which city on this list counts down first?
Auckland, New Zealand (UTC+13:00) enters the new year first of these twelve, at 18:00 on 31 December Bangkok time, followed by Sydney at 20:00 and then Tokyo and Seoul at 22:00. Worldwide, the first inhabited place is actually Kiribati's Line Islands (UTC+14:00), which is 17:00 Bangkok time.
If I am in Thailand, when can I watch the New York countdown?
At noon on 1 January, Thai time. New York is on UTC−05:00 that night, exactly 12 hours behind Thailand.
Which New Year city gets the least rain?
Dubai — 12 mm on average in December, with just 1 day of 1 mm or more in the whole month. Hong Kong and Bangkok come next, both at 19 mm (3 and 4 rain days respectively). The wettest is Singapore at 266 mm across 27 rain days. All of these are 10-year means, not forecasts.
How far ahead should I book a room for New Year's Eve?
There is no fixed number and we are not going to invent one. What is true is that 31 December cannot be moved the way an ordinary trip can, so well-located rooms go before any other night of the year. The check you can run yourself: price the same hotel for 31 December against 15 December in the same city and see how much less choice is left.

Where the numbers come from: Every temperature and rainfall figure in this article is a 2016–2025 monthly mean from the ERA5 dataset (via the Open-Meteo Historical Weather API) at each city's coordinate — a 10-year statistic, not a forecast for your trip. Any single year can differ a lot from the mean. ERA5 is a roughly 9 km reanalysis grid, not a reading from any one weather station. This is the same dataset the weather calendar in rooozt's search bar displays.

Still need a room, a ride or a flight?

New Year's Eve fills up faster than any other night — if you have picked a city, line the flight and the room up together now.
